Responsible Tourism - Cardamom House

RESPONSIBLE TOURISM

Sadly today much Tourism tends to be “Invasive” in nature.  Such tourism is insensitive to the traditions, culture and religious customs of local inhabitants. Only too often one sees scantily clad foreigners drifting around Temples with their cameras clicking away, unaware of the offence they are causing by their dress (or lack of it) – and the locals are too polite to tell them.

Our aim at “Cardamom House” is quite the opposite. We attempt to INTEGRATE with the local community as far as possible and to actually contribute to the well being of our local village of Athoor. In summary we set an example by actively promoting RESPONSIBLE TOURISM.  To achieve this we have made certain Commitments.

OUR COMMITMENT TO THE VILLAGE OF ATHOOR

We aim to fully integrate our activities with those of the local village.
We only employ Tamils as staff -no foreigners at all.
We purchase almost all of our produce from the local village market.
We only employ local village artisans -plumbers, painters, masons etc.
We ensure that guests visiting Athoor are accompanied by a staff member.
He will advise on guests on appropriate dress where needed.
He will ask the subjects permission before photographing.
He knows well local village traditions and customs.
He will help and ensure that guests really get the most out of their visit.

OUR COMMITMENT TO GIVING TO THE COMMUNITY.

At Cardamom house the staff feel strongly that it is important that we should actively contribute to the community. There are so many possible ways in which this could be done.

We, together with many of our guests, support a project which addresses the needs of destitute children. The children come mostly from broken families or may be orphans. They are all destined to a life dictated by the poverty into which they have been born. The children we support now enjoy the benefits full - time schooling, regular and excellent meals, a home and the normal companionship of other children. The prospect of becoming 'Child Labourers' has been lifted once and for all and they can now enjoy the benefits of a normal childhood that those living in the more developed countries - simply take for granted.
